Ted’s Woodworking Review – An Honest Customer Opinion

February 6, 2021 By Think Woodwork Leave a Comment

teds woodworking

Not all of us can successfully build a barn, shed, or boat on the first try. Heck, it takes some of us a couple of shots to complete the simplest projects the first time around.

No one likes feeling as if they've wasted their time. But that's part of what we go through whenever we're trying out something new for the first time.

And that's why I turned to Ted's Woodworking Projects. I needed a little boost of confidence after investing my time in failed woodworking projects.

I figured it wouldn't hurt to get some guidance. Besides, the product also comes with a 60 days money-back guarantee, so I felt it was a risk worth taking.

I decided to share my experience with other woodworking enthusiasts who might be going through the same things I went through. And are looking for a helping hand.

So this is my Teds woodworking review; an honest customer review. I will share everything I know about the woodworking plans, including what I liked and didn't like about the product.

What is Ted's Woodworking Plans?

Ted's Woodworking is a woodworking program with step-by-step instructions. It's a course that contains a variety of plans ranging from large outdoor projects to small ones that you can complete in less than a day.

The Program Features:

  • 16,000 done for you woodworking plans
  • 200 pages of guides
  • A year of personal email coaching
  • 150 how-to videos
  • A business book on how to start a woodworking business
  • DWG CAD software – to help you create, edit, or modify your plans
  • Lifetime access to download new projects added to the program

How Much Does It Cost?

The plans go for $67. However, there's Ted's woodworking discount for people who purchase it through a referral.

What this means is that you'll get a $20 discount if you buy the course through an existing customer. You can click here to gain access to the plans for $47. Although, "Ted" claims that the discount is only available for a limited amount of time.

There's some debate as to whether the plans are worth purchasing. If there weren't any doubts, people wouldn't seek out reviews and opinions from customers like me.

Most of us who've gotten our hands on the program do think it's a reasonable price for such an extensive collection. Granted, some magazines and sites offer free plans, but most of them rarely come through.

You'd have to set aside your valuable time to get a decent collection. Not all the projects in this course will appeal to you, but at least you'll have thousands of options already at your disposal.

Now that you know how much it costs, let's address one of the reasons you're here; to determine whether this program is a scam.

Is Ted's Woodworking a Scam?

teds-woodworking-reviews

Visit The Official Site

I'm not sure if you noticed, but I wrote down "Ted" in quotes while talking about the discount.

And here's why:

As I mentioned earlier, I wasn't good at woodworking. I'm still not a pro and occasionally fail even after purchasing the program.

However, I didn't dive in headfirst when I heard about Ted's Woodworking. I did some research, weighed the pros and cons. Then made my decision.

Some of the things I found out might put you off, but they weren't a deal-breaker for me.

For starters, Ted is a persona, so he technically doesn't exist. In fact, one blogger even mentioned that his pictures were stock photos that anyone can find on the internet.

I know this sounds sketchy, but if you think about it, companies use fictional personas and characters all the time to promote their products.

Knowing that, I did some further research to find out if the product itself was real. That's when I bumped into other customers who proudly shared pictures of their finished projects.

The purpose of this Ted's woodworking plans review is to give you unbiased information. That's why I'm revealing all this so that you can make a well-informed purchasing decision.

Since you're in the process of doing your research, you'll also come across claims that it's a copyright infringement product.

I did some further digging and found out that no legal action has ever been taken against 'Ted.' As far as I could tell, people pointed fingers at the course creator because he allegedly collected some of the projects from different sources.

I'm not sure if all the claims are valid, but it was a relief to know that there haven't been any legal issues and that the plans actually exist.

I'll continue to keep an eye out for legal disputes because I wouldn't recommend an illegal product to honest woodworking enthusiasts like myself.

Who should buy Ted's Woodworking Plans?

I would say that it's a good fit for you if you:

  • Are tired of buying plans only to find out that some vital information is missing
  • Want to build something that can't easily be found in retail
  • Are a DIY enthusiast who likes custom-made items
  • Are new to woodworking

Consider buying it if you plan to take on a variety of woodworking projects in the future. You won't get your money's worth if you don't make use of the plans in the collection.

Of course, you don't have to engage in all the 16,000 projects. But, you'll get a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment once your home is full of furniture and items that you've made with your own hands.

What I liked:

I liked that the plans opened me up to trying things that I normally wouldn't have.

Let me explain:

For instance, before I got them, I'd only consider making simple things like benches and chopping boards. My initial failures led me to believe that I was incapable of making structures like barns and fancy furnishings.

After purchasing the plans, I got the courage to try out new projects. The first thing I built was a dog house, and both my wife and I were at a loss for words. A dog house might not be much for some people, but it was a memorable milestone for me.

You've probably read this from other reviews, but most of the projects come with hands-on instructions. I had an easy time printing the plans and using them onsite. That was a big plus for me because the process was hassle-free.

I don't plan on taking on all the projects but going through them made me realize that there was so much that I could do with such resources at my disposal.

I'm sure with time; I'll be able to produce professional-level results. And who knows, I might just turn this into a side hustle and get some extra income by selling some of my projects.

Other Things I Liked:

  • The plans included detailed diagrams, high-quality blueprints, and schematics. However, some had better visual elements than others.
  • They came with cutting and material lists. I liked the fact that I wouldn't have to guess how much material I needed. You'll also save money because you won't buy the wrong things.
  • I had a variety of projects at my disposal. As such, I could switch between simple crafts and complex projects whenever I wanted.
  • I also liked how convenient it was because it's a digital product. I could readily access the plans from any of my devices.
  • The woodworking business book had some useful tips. It touched on locating suppliers, licensing the business, advice on accounting and tax matters, and ways to market one's projects.

What I Didn't Like

Even though some people have nothing but positive things to say about the plans, I must admit that a few things didn't sit well with me:

  • The claims that the plans make you feel like a professional is holding your hand aren't exactly valid. At least not for some of the plans that I went through.
  • There's no such thing as a perfect product, but I did feel disappointed because a few of the plans were really bad. I even came across some old ones that were unusable. And when I say old, I mean 1950's old.
  • Let's just say that you'll need to be patient when filtering through the projects because it will take some time to find the usable ones that appeal to you.
  • Like most people, I also didn't care for the woodworking videos in the member's area. They consist of readily available YouTube videos. And the worst part? Not all of them are worth watching. Fortunately, the videos are part of the bonus, so I didn't feel ripped off.
  • Lastly, I didn't like that people had to pay extra to get the DVD. That wasn't much of a deal-breaker for me though, because I was content with the downloadable pdf.

How To Get a Refund

At the beginning of this review, I mentioned how I took a risk because the plans came with a 60-day money-back guarantee. I figured I should describe the process so that you'd know how to go about it if you ever needed to.

First, to get access to the plans, you'll purchase the course via ClickBank. ClickBank also handles all the refunds. All you'll need to do is:

  • Go to the official ClickBank website
  • Provide information about the order and submit
  • On the top left corner, you can access customer support by clicking on the 'click here' button
  • Afterward, select 'more options' and write your request

Fair warning though, you'll have to be patient since the refund can take up to 2 months.

Final Thoughts

I have no regrets about purchasing the product because I properly did my research. Even though I have some complaints, I've benefited from quite a few projects already.

I'm glad that I didn't have to hire someone to handle some of those projects. And there are still several plans I'm interested in.

I would only recommend Ted's woodworking course to someone who has thoroughly done their research and is aware of its pros and cons. But in my opinion, you won't regret purchasing it if you're interested in woodworking and don't know where to start.

Besides, it's a risk-free purchase. So, you can get your money back if you don't think that it's of any value to you.

Use this Link to get the course at a discounted price once you're ready to take the plunge.

Thickness Planers

Suppliers may not always go the extra mile and trim the uneven portion of plywood. In these instances, the burden may be placed on you. Owning a thickness planer presents a worthwhile solution for this predicament. Learn more – as well some options you have – through the following article.

1. Dewalt DW735X Two-Speed Thickness Planer Package

DEWALT DW735X Two-Speed Thickness Planer

Unlike other types of wood planers, the Dewalt DW735X is built for heavy-duty projects. Professionals in need of constructing houses or putting together large pieces of furniture will find owning this an enormous convenience. Here are some of its best features.

Arguably its most remarkable quality is that it has two speeds to choose from. One is designated for thickness planing and produces a maximum speed of 179 revolutions per inch, while the second setting is better suited for detailing. The latter may be slightly slower – at just 96 cuts per inch – but is easier to control. Either one should be beneficial for varying parts of the job.

Furthermore, the Dewalt DW735X Two-Speed Thickness Planer Package also comes a dial to easily adjust the depth settings. You’ll be able to choose your desired thickness from 0.125 of an inch to 1.25. As such, customizing wood according to your liking will be that much easier to achieve.

Its set of functions is ideal for professionals working on job sites with the harshest working conditions. Although it may take multiple people to move it around, the advantages it provides are undeniable. Ultimately, this combination of power and accuracy is a big reason why many consider it as the best thickness planer available today.

Pros

  • Possesses a wide dust collection port
  • Provides larger space to work on
  • An ideal companion for creating furniture

Cons

  • Very difficult to move around

2. WEN 6550T Corded Benchtop Thickness Planer

WEN-6550-Benchtop-Thickness-Planer

The WEN 6550T Corded Benchtop Thickness Planer may not look the part, but it is a reliable piece of equipment that delivers first-rate cutting quality. Its 2-blade setup and 15-AMP motor guarantees that every board comes out as smooth as ever.

This added strength isn’t the only thing that’s worthwhile about it. A solid graphite table serves as a stable foundation to rest the wood on, while also being easy to slide through. At 12.5 inches in width, the base is wide enough to afford ample working space. Gone are the days of bending your arms, thanks to the wider range of motion it offers.

At the same time, the WEN 6550T is pretty compact, which is something very different from other thickness planers. The two side-mounted handles present a trouble-free way of moving the machine, just as the table is foldable. Storage is similarly made simpler because of both these features.

Consumers should find all the basic functions – and a little bit more. Above average safety, functionality, and durability are just some of the advantages it gives to anyone savvy enough to purchase this. So if you’re looking to upgrade your power tools collection, the WEN 6550T Corded Benchtop Thickness Planer is a model we hope you strongly consider.

Portable Planers

Not all work is done in just a singular location. Sometimes, users may be asked to change workstations and take their tools with them. Thus, having mechanisms that are easy to transport is of utmost importance. If you’re the type of person that relates with this situation, check the following portable planers out.

1. POWERTEC PL1251 Benchtop Thickness Planer

POWERTEC-PL1251-Planer

Transferability isn’t the only wonderful thing about the POWERTEC PL1251 Benchtop Thickness Planer. A 15-AMP and 9,400-RPM motor is able to supply an average of 18,000 cuts per minute to almost any type of wood. This is valuable because deep insertions are a quick way of measuring the wood before ultimately leveling it.

Besides its high-powered engine, an innovative double-blade system allows it to act as a hot knife through butter. This killer combination – so to speak – is built for all kinds of different responsibilities. Consumers are free to use it on both big and small woodworking projects without any fear of damage.

In order to properly support those features I mentioned, the POWERTEC PL1251’s exterior – particularly the base – has been made more robust. Instead of aluminum or plastic, it is made from hard steel so that wood simply slides through and it can take on the added weight of heavy materials. At the same time, this greatly minimizes wobbling as you work, leading to better outputs produced.

Overall, if you’re looking for a solid unit to invest in that will be around for several years, the POWERTEC PL1251 Benchtop Thickness Planer must be your choice. It may not be the easiest to understand, most especially for beginners, but once you do, it should become an asset for all your woodworking projects. After all, it is touted as one of the best selections in our thickness planer review.

Pros

  • Assembly is simple to do
  • Its body looks very sleek and stylish
  • Handles almost any type of wood very well

Cons

  • Learning to use it can be challenging

2. Dewalt D26676 Portable Hand Planer

DEWALT D26676 3-1/4-Inch Portable Hand Planer

As we’ve mentioned earlier, Dewalt is one of the best manufacturers of wood planers. In their entirety, they have introduced many different models that answer the various growing needs of consumers. The Dewalt D26676 Portable Hand Planer is no exception. Compactness is an often-overlooked element – just because users always prioritize cutting strength – but why choose when you can have both?

Weighing in at only 8 lbs, this device can easily be controlled with just one hand. The rubberized handle delivers better control so you won’t ever feel any resistance when moving the planer. Additionally, this lightweight design places very little strain on your arms or wrists, meaning you work longer in more regular bursts. In the long run, it helps make your work habits more efficient.

Despite its size, it packs quite a punch as well. It is installed with 5.5-AMP motor that produces a removal rate of 34,000 cuts per minute. By comparison, this ratio is similar to other units that would cost you way more, making the Dewalt D26676 a real bargain.

Specialists looking for a heavy-duty machine might need to look elsewhere, though, since this isn’t suited for harsh endeavors. However, everyday tasks like simple woodworking projects at home should be a piece of cake for this portable hand planer.

Pros

  • Compatible with almost all carbide blades
  • Has a depth cut of up to 1/16th of an inch
  • A kickstand balances the planer when not in use

Cons

  • Better suited for less-wearing projects

Hand Planers

A hand planer is a manual tool used to even out portions of wood. Even though it may look pretty primitive, its results are undisputable when finishing off planks or boards. Best of all, it is cheap and is an ideal secondary tool for all your projects. You can learn more about this nifty instrument through its variations currently available to consumers.

1. Grizzly H7568 Smoothing Planer

Grizzly H7568 22-Inch Smoothing Plane

The Grizzly H7568 Smoothing Planer looks like a tool your grandfather used in his workshop 30 years ago – and he probably did, or at least an older model. But there’s a reason why these devices have been around for so long. Their ability to finish a project neatly is undisputable and provides much value to users worldwide.

Although its range of functions is limited, it does a sensational job of leveling wood, especially on the sides or edges. It weighs roughly 8.5 lbs and has an approximate dimension of 6 by 22.4 by 3.5, which is slightly smaller than the average. Since a majority of the force is produced manually, its nimble size will put minimal stress on your arms.

Another extraordinary element about the Grizzly H7568 is its stylishness. Instead of being made from lumber, this smoothing plane uses a conventional all-steel design that only improves its performance. At the same time, it is well-matched for all kinds of working conditions.

Of course, its most appealing quality has to be its portability. The whole planer can fit snuggly inside most carrying bags or toolboxes. So if you’re someone who travels around a lot from one site to another, this is a convenient plus to have, especially since it works best as a complementary piece to other more powerful planers. Ultimately, purchasing this unit won’t cost you much, making it a low-risk, high-reward transaction. Consider it as a final piece to your assortment of tools.

Pros

  • Handles are firm
  • Can be used in all types of projects
  • Easy to transport

2. Taytools 469591 Fore Bench Hand Planer

Taytools 469591 Fore Bench Hand Plane

An upgraded exterior is perhaps the best thing about the Taytools 469591 Fore Bench Hand Planer. Both its total exterior and blade have been fortified to combat any type of working condition or wear-and-tear issue.

To be specific, the body and fog of this machine are made from ductile cast iron, while the blade is fashioned using tool steel. Moreover, its handles have been custom made using hand-rubbed Sapele, which is a known substitute for Mahogany. A big reason for it is because people are easily drawn to the vivid colors it exudes. These enhancements aren’t just for show, of course, as they help provide added durability to this hand plane.

As a result of these improvements, users can freely utilize it on larger pieces of wood. Still, its size isn’t a hindrance to transporting it. At an average of 8 lbs, the Taytools 469591 is light enough to be carried around or placed inside a tool bag. This is especially advantageous for users who venture from one project to another.

The only downside to this model is its steeper price. Compared with similar models, the Taytools 469591 is on the higher end of the spectrum. Needless to say, purchasing this product has to be viewed as an investment. You may not feel the ROI immediately, but in 2 or three years you surely will.

Pros

  • Its sole precision is based on British standards
  • Very eye-catching design
  • Meant to last for several years

Joint Planer Combo

Saying that jointers and planers are the same is like comparing a lion and a tiger. They may seem similar or even look the same, but they’re two totally different animals. So instead of continually confusing consumers, why not just combine the best qualities of these two tools?

To help you understand things better, we’ve compiled a list of the best joint planer combos currently available. But as a teaser, here are the top 2 models based on our research.

1. Jet JJP-8BT Benchtop Jointer Planer

Jet JJP-8BT 8" Jointer/Planer Combo

Jet is perhaps the go-to option for anything joint planer related. Through their years of existence, they’ve studied and mastered the union of both these power tools to create units beloved by countless consumers. Needless to say, the Jet JJP-8BT Benchtop Jointer Planer is a piece of machinery unlike any other.

The 13-AMP motor is the driving force behind its cutting strength, with the ability to produce 18,000 cuts and a feed speed of up to 19.5 feet every minute. These numbers are made even more impressive considering it does the work of two machines.

As a result, it delivers a robust performance job after job. Just be mindful, though, because this planer is more suitable for projects at home than on a construction site. Push it beyond its limits might result in unwarranted damage.

Moreover, both the knives and outfeed table have been enhanced using steel material, which is valuable for you because it can take on heavier pieces of wood. At the same time, it delivers accurate cuts with each strike. This blend of power and precision will go a long way in improving the quality of woodworks you create. Once you use this for several months, you’ll notice a very distinct difference in output.

Finally, having two instruments in one is obviously a relief on your wallet. You’ll spend less and use up a smaller area in your workshop. As a result, your efficiency should improve allowing you to allot resources to more pressing matters. Truly, the Jet JJP-8BT is one of the best portable jointer planers to invest in.

Pros

  • Combining two machines is a space saver
  • Easy to adjust settings
  • Offers good value for money

Cons

  • Difficult to assemble

2. Jet JJP-10BTOS Benchtop Jointer Planer

Jet JJP-10BTOS 10-Inch Bench-Top Jointer/Planer

Another product worthy of your attention is the Jet JJP-10BTOS Benchtop Jointer Planer. It may be eerily similar to an earlier model, the Jet JJP-8BT, but the added durability makes it capable of taking part in heavier-duty tasks. Professionals looking for a dual-purpose power tool with superb efficiency should take a long hard look at this.

Probably the best thing about this model is its ease of use as it comes with several features designed to simplify your life. Firstly, those small buttons have been replaced with oversized knobs, allowing you to make minor adjustment without any hassle. You can do it while holding onto the plank because the controls are so visible and easy to feel around for.

The Jet JJP-10BTOS also has its own stand. A rigid steel table provides ample support while you work, serving as a suitable foundation for the entire machine. Best of all, the height can be accustomed to your liking, so that you maintain an upright and comfortable position at all times. Lowering it down back into a benchtop form is likewise an option should this be your preference.

As the whole, this selection from Jet is a pretty candid piece of equipment. While it is by no means a heavyweight, it still provides enough value to be considered on of the best jointer planers for operators. Those seeking an affordable option that’s complete with all the basic features should be pleased with the JJP-10BTOS Benchtop Jointer Planer.

Pros

  • The cutting width is wide enough
  • Flexible in terms of size and setup
  • User-friendly

Cons

  • Its infeeds and outfeeds sometimes get misaligned

Things to Consider When Buying a Wood Planer

With so many different units available, choosing the right wood planer can indeed be a challenge. So to make this task more manageable, we’ve identified some factors you need to consider before finalizing a transaction.

1. Size and Portability

As you have probably already observed, all the best wood planers come in different shapes and sizes. Some are mobile, while others are incredibly bulky and difficult to move. As such, before purchasing anything, try to think about where you are planning to put it, or better yet – will you need to take it around with you a lot?

The size of your selection will greatly determine this ability and will either be a great asset for your work or a huge liability. After all, the last thing you want is spending several hundred dollars, only to realize it doesn’t fit your lifestyle – literally and figuratively.

2. Durability

Each model is designed for specific levels of tasks. There are some that can be used on rigorous job sites, while others would get damaged under such pressure. Thus, durability is another essential element that needs ample consideration.

All-steel parts and tough exterior are both clear signs that a wood planer is built for rugged tasks. Even its cutting strength can be seen as an indicator of this. Stability and sturdiness may seem unimportant, though they’ll go a long way in preserving the quality of your products.

3. User-Friendliness

Ease of use may be very subjective to each user, but there are actually ways to determine whether a planer is friendly for users. Little things like how easy it is to assemble, how accessible are its controls, and even the way it is held, are all ways to prove this. This property is especially imperative for beginners who are still learning the ropes. It isn’t just to teach them the basics, but also to preserve their enthusiasm.

4. Safety Features

Working with blades is a continuous risk, no matter how careful you are. Therefore, choosing a model already equipped with safety features is a big help in lessening accidents. Simple measures like a blade guard or headlock very much welcome. Even having a stable stand will go a long way in keeping you free from injury. It even prevents the machine from suddenly turning on.

At the end of the day, being protected should be the priority. So don’t ever overlook these functions when you choose your next wood planer.

5. Budget

The price is almost always going to be a major consideration when discerning a purchase. So in order to not spend more than you have to, try to identify a specific budget. This amount needs to be a balance of your projected value received and what you are willing to invest. Learning towards one side may result in buyer’s remorse – and we don’t want that.

Just remember the ever-popular phrase, you get what you pay for. If you’ll be using the tool for work, then it’s ok to splurge a little. However, there are also a lot of affordable models that offer enough benefits for neophytes. Ultimately, it’s all about finding a unit that’s right for what you are willing to pay. You can also try to purchase it while they are on sale.

Frequently Asked Questions

Numerous consumers still find wood planers both intimidating and unnecessary. However, a large reason for this is the overall lack of knowledge. We want to reverse this mindset by answering the following frequently asked questions. Hopefully learning more will generate more appreciation for this wonderful power tool.

1. What is the difference between a planer and a jointer?

Basically, a jointer is a machine used to make a board perfectly flat in preparation for joining. At the same time, it removes any damages that could potentially become an issue later on. A planer, on the other hand, works to create a consistent thickness across the plank. It utilizes a blade to cut the sides or edges, and produce an even surface.

In most woodworking projects, consumers will need both these tools to get the job done. Hence, you can purchase a single jointer, planer, or a machine that combines the best qualities of each one. Whichever the case, it should prove to be beneficial.

2. How much does a wood planer usually cost?

Usually, an average wood planer would usually be around $500 to $700. Of course, there are cheaper models that cost $300 or $400, while higher-end models would rack up a few thousand dollars. Choosing the right option really depends on what you’ll be using it for, but these are all safe estimates to take note of.

3. What is a good warranty package to look out for?

When researching, always look for a warranty package that covers at least 2 years. This should cover any minor damages like broken cords or cracks. This also shows how willing the manufacturer is to extending any after sales service. We’ve always been partial towards companies that value accountability and customer care, and we would always suggest this to be a priority.

It may seem irrelevant now, but you’ll thank us three years down the line.

Conclusion

After thoroughly reading this review, we can only hope that our fondness for wood planers has been passed on to you. Woodworking projects and DIY jobs at home are growing hobbies all over the world. One way to truly maximize this is to have quality tools at your disposal. Otherwise, you may just end up being frustrated at all the things you can’t do.

So whether you’re a professional or beginner in this niche, we would recommend you consider the Dewalt DW735X Two-Speed Thickness Planer Package. While it isn’t the easiest machine to move around, its range of uses, dual settings, and functional design are all truly exceptional. There is absolutely no doubt in our mind that you’ll enjoy using this on any task you choose.

4. Dewalt DW745S Compact Jobsite Table Saw

It’s not at all surprising that much like Bosch, we now have a second Dewalt table saw on our review list. Both companies have had a long successful history of introducing quality products to consumers. The DW745S Compact Jobsite Table Saw is another prime illustration of this truth.

Conclusion

Even the best pros will need the right tools to get through each job. Power, accuracy, and durability are the function most looked at, but after going through our best jobsite table saw review, we hope you realize this isn’t all that matters. Aspects like on-board storage, flexibility, dust collection, and mobility are all equally crucial in making each work session more fun and efficient. Ultimately, these have been added to eliminate stress on your end.

So when on the process of choosing your next jobsite table saw, be sure to consider those factors too. Identify your needs, also, as this will serve as your compass when canvassing through different models. In the end, it’s all about finding one that’s perfect for you rather than in general.

However, if we could make our recommendation for what we think is the best jobsite table saw currently on the market, it would probably be the Bosch 4100-10 Jobsite Table Saw. It has virtually everything one could ask for in a power tool and will be a big boost in all your aspirations. Even though it costs more than $500, the value it brings back is well worth it.

2. Klutch 2705S058 Floor Drill Press

Klutch 2705S058 Floor Drill Press

If you want a tool that offers you the highest quality and performance, all at an affordable price, then the Klutch 2705S058 Floor Drill Press is an ideal choice. Its powerful 0.75-horsepower motor can handle almost all of your drilling jobs – both for metal and wood – and provide you with a slew of other benefits too.

This option has a 13-inch swing size, able to penetrate workpieces of varying sizes without much difficulty. It also comes with 16 pre-installed speed settings – the most in this category – so you can customize the power specifically for each project. For example, selecting the 260-RPM is best suited for thin metal sheets easily without generating any heat, while increased levels mean drilling through thicker materials. Once you reach its maximum of 3,410-RPM, you can bore through virtually anything.

Adjusting the work table has likewise been made easier, thanks to a depth lock with ball knob system. Simply spin its level to move the platform either upward or downward, then twist the locking mechanism to hold its position. You no longer have to guess or estimate anything. This setup places the structure exactly where you want it.

Unfortunately for users, its table angle can only be bent up to 45-degrees, which is well below the standard. Don’t get us wrong; this arrangement is still workable. We would have just wanted it to be at least 90-degrees for all-out versatility. The manufacturers attempt to make up for this, though, by adding cool fixtures like a gooseneck LED light and chuck key for smoother operation.

As a whole, the Klutch 2705S058 Floor Drill Press may not be the most comprehensive choice out there, but still serviceable. Throw in the fact that it won’t cost you much to own and you suddenly have a strong option for all your woodworking needs.

Pros

  • Comes with 16 different speed settings
  • Simple height adjustment
  • Provides ample speed for all your projects
  • Illuminates dark areas easily

Cons

  • Limited table angle
  • You need a chuck key to align bits
  • Users might not like that it’s made in China

4. WEN 4227 Floor Level Drill Press

WEN 4227 Floor Level Drill Press

Another quality unit that’s both reliable and reasonably priced is the WEN 4227 Floor Level Drill Press. Just by looking at the unit itself, you can see how very durably it is built. The frame is robust at 214-lbs and connected to a solid 14-inch cast-iron frame. Users that require more support while working will find this development quite beneficial.

Aside from being hardwearing, the worktable is also entirely flexible, both literally and figuratively. Users can tilt this platform up to 45-degrees in either direction and maximize the space to fit workpieces of different sizes. Furthermore, the presence of a 4.75-inch spindle provides better reach when drilling. There’s no longer need to manually adjust the piece when achieving the depth you want.

In terms of power produced, the WEN 4227 Floor Level Drill Press is right up there, if not better than the other top models. A 13-AMP motor drives this machine into producing as much as 2,940-RPM, which may seem low compared to other models. While this is hardly exceptional in terms of numbers, we believe it to still be tough enough for professionals to use on a daily basis. Hard plastic, plywood, and even metal are no match for its impeccable penetrating capabilities. Best of all, you can be assured that it won’t choke or slow down, even on the most difficult of projects.

Though this machine is intendedly mainly for professionals, the gentle learning curve has made it a popular alternative for beginners too. Those seeking a wide-ranging option – and are ready to spend on it – will soon realize the WEN 4227 Floor Level Drill Press is surely something worth considering.

Pros

  • Armed with an X-Pattern laser for more accurate drilling
  • Has 12 pre-installed speed settings to choose from

FAQs – Frequently Asked Questions

1. Who are floor drill presses best suited for?

As you have probably already noticed by now, a floor drill press – when compared to other types – is larger, more powerful, and has a higher price tag. And while we don’t want to generalize, these properties are far more suited for professionals serious about putting in the work. In our opinion, only those truly passionate about this craft can maximize the range of uses it offers.

However, just like anything in life, there are certainly some exceptions. So if you’re a newbie who’s fully committed and interested to learn more about woodcrafts, then, by all means, be our guest. Just remember that to be successful, you’ll need to invest both money and patience in this endeavor.

2. How much does a standard floor drill press cost?

On average, a mid-level model would cost you anywhere between $400 to $700. These options would usually include a solid variable-speed motor, a durable base, and a few add-on accessories. Although if you’ll be needing something much more complex, expect its price tag to reach quadruple digits. $1000 to $1200 should be a safe estimate for that.

3. Are these power tools really difficult to transport?

The easy answer here is yes. As their name suggests, floor models are meant to be kept on the ground, which means their bases are sturdier, while also supporting larger work tables. As such, before even purchasing a unit, think first where you are putting it and if there’s enough space around. These are both logical considerations that could have potential long-term effects.

Though floor drill presses aren’t impossible to move, this is still quite a challenge to accomplish. And after all, isn’t it way better to get it right the first time?

Conclusion

Choosing the perfect floor drill press is far from an easy task. With so many factors that need to be considered, even the slightest of missteps can lead to catastrophic effects – or at least a product you aren’t happy with. So when canvassing through your options, we urge you to take a more personal approach. Begin with knowing what you want before drowning in the sea of choices. Determine also what your priorities are.

In our case, we value performance above anything else. This means we are willing to sacrifice both price and portability to get our hands on the smoothest running model out there. Thus, we believe that the Delta 18-900L 18-Inch Laser Drill Press is what our heart – and woodworking soul – desires. Its blend of drilling strength and motor speed is just too good to pass up.

How about you? What is your pick for the best floor drill press currently available to consumers?

Plunge Router Reviews

1. Dewalt DW625 Variable Speed Electronic Plunge Router

DEWALT DW625 3-Horsepower Variable Speed Electronic Plunge Router

Dewalt is one of the most reputable companies around and through almost a century of experience, they’ve consistently produced quality power tools to make everyone’s lives easier. The DW625 Variable Speed Electronic Plunge Router is only a small sample size of this truth.

Since its introduction, this product has become quite popular among consumers. Its powerful 3-horsepower motor can dig through even the thickest of exteriors, while a rack-and-pinion allows you to create slices with varying depths. This should broaden the types of cuts you are capable of producing.

In terms of compactness and mobility, the Dewalt DW625 Variable Speed Electronic Plunge Router is friendly to users too. Its small size makes it easy to carry around – even with just one hand – and control. Though we would have preferred the handles to be better designed. There have been times when it counteracts the motion we were trying to do.

Still, this unit is one of the best plunge router options you can ever find. Some of its best attributes include durability, dependability, and being high-performing. Needless to say, it should be a true asset in your workshop.

Pros

  • Its speed can be adjust from 8,000 to 22,000 RPM
  • Developed to produce accurate cuts
  • Comes with several accessories
  • Includes a 1-year free service contract

Cons

2. Makita RP2301FC Plunge Router

Makita RP2301FC Plunge Router

Another quality option to consider is the Makita RP2301FC Plunge Router. It may not run as smoothly as the Dewalt DW625, but it has perhaps a more complete repertoire. Armed with a 3.25-horsepower motor with a maximum speed of 22,000-RPM, this can serve as a viable solution for all your woodworking needs.

One example is a soft-start feature. This function controls the engine by gradually increasing the power until it reaches your desired speed, which is in contrary to other models that heat-up too quickly before eventually short-circuiting. We truly appreciate the mindfulness of Makita to include this in their product, as it makes everything easier to control and extends the overall life span.

Furthermore, the Makita RP2301FC Plunge Router is ergonomically-designed in a way that rivals the best. Thick rubberized handles are present to better maneuver it around tight places, while a lock-on trigger ensures continuous operation. There are even LED lights present so you can still work even when in dimly lit locations.

It won’t matter whether you’re an amateur or specialist on this; the Makita RP2301FC is definitely a tool you can use. Seeing all the advantages it provides will only push you to pursue wood-crafting even more.

3. Bosch MRP23EVS Electronic Plunge-Base Router

Bosch-MRC23EVSK-Combination-Plunge-Fixed-Base-Variable-Speed-Router

It’s not at all surprising that the Bosch MRP23EVS Electronic Plunge-Base Router is on our illustrious list. The quality of cuts created is astounding, considering it looks more like a character from Star Wars than a high-tech power tool. However, don’t let is looks fool you because this is easily one of the best.

Our favorite thing about this model is the trigger control system. Since all the major settings can be found in a singular place, adjusting them is made easier. This is especially valuable when taking on detail woodworks since several micro-movements are needed. As a result, your actions are much more fluid and the quality of each product, vastly improved.

Additionally, an innovative Afterlock Micro-Fine Adjustment function simplifies that task of fine-tuning your bits. Instead of adjusting depths manually, both a turret stop and two-stage quick-clamp system enables this even without the use of tools. Finally, a precision-centering property keeps the bit aligned to the base at all times.

Ultimately, utilizing the Bosch MRP23EVS Electronic Plunge-Base Router won’t require much acclimation. Even first-time users should adapt to it like a fish in the water. Check this out if you desire a hassle-free work session.

  • A great option for beginners
  • Firm handles give you better control
  • Installed with LED lights

Cons

4. Triton TRA001 Plunge Router

Triton TRA001 3-1/4 HP Dual Mode Precision Plunge Router

One of the most underrated entries on our review is the Triton TRA001 Plunge Router. But after learning more about it, we hope that consumers learn to appreciate this model for the marvelous things it is capable of doing.

In terms of performance, this plunge router carries a 3.25-horsepower, 15-AMP motor, which is among the strongest in its class. Even the heftiest chunks of lumber are no match for this tool’s cutting strength. Also, a revolutionary rack-and-pinion system lets you switch it from plunge-base to fixed-base in mere seconds.

Users will likewise be happy to know that the Triton TRA001 has made shifting speed settings much simpler. A micro winder manages this so you can select the perfect rapidity for each task. Eventually, it should result in better control and more precise actions.

It is true that many readers may feel apprehensive spending so much on a wood router not manufactured by a big company, but we’re here to calm those concerns. Nevertheless, Triton has done everything right to prove they deserve a spot on our best plunge router review.
